Steve James plays electric and slide guitar, singing with drummer and soulful vocalist Pipp Gillette. The duo is devoted exclusively to music from East Texas, like Freddie King’s “Hideaway” and Ted Daffan’s “Born To Lose” T-Bone Walker’s “Trinity River Blues” and Lightnin’ Hopkins’ “Traveler’s Blues”. Short Blue Stories (2009 Hobemian) $16
Steve’s most recent solo effort. Original songs and instrumentals along with roots classics from Frank Hutchison, Garfield Akers and Furry Lewis. 6 and 12-string acoustic and resonator guitars and mandolin aplenty. “Short Blue Stories entered the international Americana Radio Top 100 chart (based on reported plays fromprogrammers) for 2009- 2010 rated as #90 disc with the #20 song; Steve’s own “Folk Radio”. Sixteen tracks in all.
Fast Texas (Burnside 48) $16
Steve’s 2003 sessions are back in print since Allegro Media acquired the Burnside catalog! This sequence of original and classic songs from, about and for the Lone Star State is a must- hear for twangsters. Steve’s own guitar, slide guitar, mandolin and vocals are supported by Del Rey’s guitar work, Cindy Cashdollar’s dobro and steel and Ruthie Foster’s harmony singing. 16 tracks in all, which include the title track, “Fisherman’s Reel” and “Freestone County Blues”.
Boom Chang (Burnside 38) $16
These 14 tracks from 2000 show Steve at the top of his game; solo and with support from Cindy Cashdollar, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Mark Rubin and the late, great Gary Primich. Songs include “Stack Lee’s Blues”, Sonny Payne and “Saturday Night In Jail”.
Two Track Mind (Antone’s 0024) $16
We still have a few boxes of this out of print gem. Steve’s first solo album was originally released in 1989; then again with some bonus tracks by Antone’s a couple of years later. (These units have small cuts in the jewel boxes put there by the label when Steve cleaned ’em out.) 12 songs include “Frankie and Albert”, “Bachelor Blues” and “Guitar Rag”. Selected by Acoustic Guitar in their 20th Anniversary issue as one of the standout acoustic discs of the last two decades.
